Messermeister has developed a loyal following for a quality knife manufacturer. They offer a large selection of knives and accessories. This article will give you a run down of the knife lines they offer and our opinion of each. We order these lines in terms of quality.
Messermeister Meridian:
This is Messermeister's flagship product line and we like it the best. The knives have several features that make them stand out from many other German knife manufacturer's.
The steel is high quality but this is not unique. Wusthof, F Dick and Henckels all offer high quality steel in their lines as well. What is unique is the fact that these knives have tapered bolsters which make for years of easy sharpening. Most German forged knives have large bolsters that run down the heel of the blade right to the edge. The other feature that is very nice is the edges are sharpened and then polished to a mirror finish. It's a really nice touch and ads to the overall attractiveness of the knife. Finally, the handles are rounded and have a nice ergonomic design that we find very comfortable to use.
Messermeister San Moritz:
The San Moritz line has the same blade construction and features as the Meridian line but the handle has been redesigned to offer a more contemporary look. We prefer the handles on the Meridian but not by much. This is more an aesthetic choice you will have to make. Overall, this is a good line.
Messermeister Asian Precision:
This line was developed to help the company compete in the exploding Japanese kitchen knife market here in the U.S. The knives feature a traditional line up of knife styles with three rivet standard handles. The steel used is harder than the German lines above and the edges are ground more steeply resulting in sharper knives out of the box. These knives are ok but they do not perform as well as the first two. Also, there are much better choices if you want Japanese Knives.
Messermeister Park Plaza:
These are one piece stamped knives that are geared toward professionals and those on a budget. We are not overly impressed with this line. The handles are a little cheap and the blades feel a bit flimsy in the hand. Overall we much prefer the Meridian line.
Messermeister Four Seasons:
These are the cheapest in cost and quality of the Messermeister lines. They have molded plastic handles and thin stamped blades. The only reason to buy these is if you want to have a few knives around in a commercial kitchen and don't care if someone walks off with them or abuses them. We would stay away.
