Knife Case Review

Overview:

Knife cases which are also known as knife rolls are hugely popular with professionals and culinary students because they allow for easy transportation of their most coveted tools. The best knife cases are durable, light and have lots of pockets for accessories like meat thermometers, sharpening steels, pen holders and kitchen shears. We have taken a look inside several of the most popular small knife cases and here is our opinion on each:

Henckels 7 Piece Knife Roll:

This small knife roll is cheap at about $20. The knife roll has 7 pockets to accept knives, shears or a sharpening steel and a folding flap to protect them. The material is made of Poly-Tech which is a synthetic product that feels a little like leather. There is no strap for this knife roll and it closes with 2 Velcro straps on the outside. It also lacks any extra pockets or places to store accessories. Overall this is an adequate, no frills knife roll but it's our least favorite of the group.

Wusthof 8 Piece Knife Roll:

Wusthof has made and excellent knife roll. The case has a zipper flap on the inside to more securely protect your knives and on the inside has a large mesh pocket to store lots of small accessories. The knife roll also has several pockets for business cards and some pen/thermometer holders as well. The roll has 2 rings to accept a shoulder strap which we like. Finally it is made from a canvass like material and has a identification pull out tab so you can put your name and address in case it is lost. A handle on the top makes it easy to carry even without the shoulder strap. This is our choice for the best knife roll in it's class. The cost is about $30.

Messermeister 8 Piece Knife Roll:

Messermeister invented this category. Before they came along most cooks used muslin fabric with ties to roll up their knives. This case is a solid choice and is very much like the Wusthof case above. It has similar pockets, as well as the same mesh holder inside. We do prefer the Wusthof case because of the identification pocket on the outside of the bag. Messermeister has one as well but it is exposed for people to easily see which could be a security issue. The Wusthof case has their ID pocket concealed. Anyways, a solid choice and miles above the Henckels Roll. This roll costs about $27.
