Overview:
Meat Slicers are a real money saver for families. Sliced deli meat is typically 3 times the cost of buying a roast and slicing it yourself. We have tested several models for the home and have found them all to work quite well. As you go up in price the units typically get larger and more powerfull. You should pay close attention to size of the unit as well as size of the blade when making a choice so you won't be disappointed. These slicers are ordered in terms of cost with the least expensive first:
Chef's Choice #610: This popular Meat Slicer is a somewhat versatile, rugged and budget-friendly slicer. The unit features a multi-purpose, 7-inch, stainless steel blade and tilted food carriage. Other features include precision thickness control from approximately 1" thick to paper thin, easy-clean cantilever design and tilted, large capacity food carriage. The unit has a safety lock on the food carriage when not in use. The blade, food carriage, food pusher, food deflector, and thickness plate all remove easily for cleaning. While this small unit and stricktly meant for home use, it works quite well and did a good job slicing our roast beef. The 7" blade is small, however and we had to cut the roast down to size for it to be used. Edgecraft manufacturer's a number of different food slicers and this is the entry level model that prices for about $100.
Chef's Choice #630 : This home meat slicer offers you many of the features found in commercial slicers. It operates in an upright, fixed position for smooth and precise slicing. It has a more durable 100 watt universal motor, gear drive, a 7" diameter blade. Its cantilevered design is convenient for larger trays and easy clean up. The food carriage retracts fully so you can slice extra large roasts, hams and other foods. This slicer is a step up in quality from their entry model 610 and the price is about $220. If you plan on using your slicer once a week or more we think this is a good model and worth the extra price.
Chef's Choice #645: This is our favorite slicer from Chef's Choice. We found the unit works well and is very quiet. Cuts deli thin and has good safety features. Our only small complaint is that the cord is a little too short and we would like to see a snap-in connection for the blade for easier removal and cleaning. This unit cost is about $380
Reviewers Say:
There are several publications that rate meat slicers and most of them give good marks to this slicer. Size is a plus in that the unit is easy to store and fits on a counter without taking up too much room but it is also a drawback because it cannot handle larger foods. Several reviewers mentioned that they had to cut food down to an acceptable size before being able to use the slicer.
